The Mazda
1988 - 1994
The car originated as a project of the Chaffey College Racing Association,
comprised of past and present students at Chaffey Community College in Rancho
Cucamonga, California. It was designed by Kent Fisk, the instructor of the
Racecar Technology Classes held at the college, and completely built by the students.
It was built to specifications to run in the GTU class in IMSA and GT-2 for the
Sports Car Club of America's SCCA Club Racing Series.
1995 - 1997
With the dissolution of the CCRA at the same time the car was finished,
Professor Fisk and two of the students, John Stott and Kent Collins took
possession of the car, and created Apex Motorsports. After running limited
races in 1995, testing the car, Stott (as driver) and Collins (as crew chief)
proceeded to run full seasons in SCCA 1996 and 1997, capturing the Southern
Pacific Divisional Championship both years.
While capturing the championships, the Apex Motorsports team set new lap
records at Buttonwillow Raceway Park (a SCCA-owned track in central California)
and at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and participated in the 1996 SCCA Run-Offs
National Championship Race at the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course in Mansfield, Ohio.
At the Run-Offs, the team finished eighth overall in a field of nearly 30 cars
and won the "Stack Drive of the Race Award." In a total of XXX races, Apex
amassed XXX wins, XXX lap records and XXX fastest race laps.
1998 - 2001
Realizing that the car would be even more competitive with some modifications
and less weight, Stott and Collins took two years off from active competition
to rebuild the car. The result you see before you is on its way to a full
season of racing in 2002, with the goal of participating in - and winning -
the national championship at the SCCA Run-Offs in the GT-2 class.
